Da’ Bulls. Bloodless Bullfighting

How does one explain bloodless bullfighting?? That is a good question. We went to the last of three Don Bull sessions this weekend at the South Point. And it was a blast. Nothing like the PA or I had expected and made us upset that we missed the previous shows last year.
Instead of the blood, gore and violence you associate with bullfighting; you have a pageantry of pride, skills and a lot of bravado being displayed as they challenge and taunt the bull into submission.
You have the bullfighters using banderillas tipped with Velcro instead of spears. The brightly colored matadors thrust the re-engineered swords onto a sheet of Velcro on the bull’s back. Hard to imagine, but it works…
It is the dance between the bullfighter and the bull that needs to be seen to really be appreciated. The skills and the style each matador has to wear down the bull and get the spears to stick are captivating in its own right. To finally have the bull at your submission determines the win or the end of the match.
This sport originated in Spain, is popular in Mexico and growing in California. This was one of the few times it is seen anywhere else. That was the main objective for the show was to prove the sport could be entertaining without the violence and that it is about the art form, more than the spectacle.
As always, if there is a bull involved, you have a 99.999% chance that at least one of them will spot your lovable host and want to have a piece of me. This event was no exception. Checkout this picture to see just how close we were to the bulls (Mark meets the bull). We could count the hairs in his flaring nostrils as he sized me up….
