While it seemed like OSHA Nevada was on a two year sabbatical and the Clark County building inspectors were out checking the local pool scene for violations, MGM was pushing ahead on their massive CityCenter project. 12 workers were killed while building the project.
As a result of all this hurry-up-and-build mentality, there were a few short cuts taken. Luckily in at least one instance, a third party did some inspections and found a few flaws in the Harmon hotel building and stopped construction. The unique oval glass tower that sits between the Cosmopolitan and CityCenter shopping district.
What was supposed to be a 46 floor hotel, ended up being a 26 story white elephant. Apparently rebar is not suppose to be sticking up out of the concrete and the building as it sits, can not withstand an earthquake. The county wants it fixed or demolished, now.
Perini, the contractor responsible for the construction, claims MGM doesn’t want it fixed. Saying that it is worth more dead than alive. MGM says they want it fixed, but don’t want it opened right now, fearing it would cause more of a room glut than we currently are experiencing.
The two have locked horns on who is going to pay for what and when. It seems that CityCenter has a few other issues to hammer out with the builder. Clark County wants an answer by August 15th on the Harmon building. I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one.
We all know that Las Vegas is famous for our implosions. we love to blow things up. But if they decide that route, how do they pull that off without causing severe damage to neighboring buildings?? One of those properties they don’t own. The others are on CityCenter property and made of glass.
For some of us Vegas purists, we would love to see the whole CityCenter project implode. Now That Would make for some great prime time viewing! Again, I wouldn’t hold my breath on that!! Until they come to a solution, it makes a great billboard for the Elvis show.
