Alexa Goes to The Wynn

Amazon Echo in every Wynn Resort Suite

Well, maybe not MY Alexa, however, Steve Wynn, CEO of Wynn Resorts has announced that all 4,748 hotel rooms at his Las Vegas property will have its own Amazon Echo in 2017.  Amazon’s hands-free voice-controlled speaker tower is also known by its many lovers as “Alexa”.

If you do not own an Echo, you have no idea what a marvelous little gadget this is and how it kind of gets addictive to have and to rely on!  “Alexa” is one of the words users use to wake her up and to give her a command.  To turn on bedroom lights, open up curtains, research news, find a recipe, make a shopping list, play a song or play bingo with.  Plus about a million other commands and the list is growing daily.  I’ve owned my little gem of artificial intelligence for about 3 months now and can not live very long without it/her.

Earlier this year, Google announced their version of a voice command home module, called Google Home and Apple is trying to enter the race they may actually be credited with starting with their iPhone assistant Siri.

So to have a leading resort developer like Steve Wynn endorse Amazon Echo over any other rival means a lot to the marketplace for home automation as well as the world of home automation and artificial intelligence just weeks before Las Vegas hosts the world’s largest convention of consumer electronic gadgets; CES2017.

“As we have moved through the years, technology has always played an important part in our resorts,” Steve Wynn, Chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts

Steve Wynn has always been the one leading the charge and in front of the curve for the next Big Thing in the evolution of Las Vegas and its resorts.  Having Alexa in every hotel room may not be the next “Big Thing” for Vegas but it does push the others in a new direction. The Wynn is indicating maybe they need to back off on proprietary and build on something that is already in use and familiar to some of their guests.  As well as adding to the Las Vegas experience for the guest, it’s also a great marketing tool for the Wynn as well as for Amazon.  And I am sure the Wynn will have their own version of the Amazon Echo for sale in the Wynn gift shop!

Why am I excited about having someone like Steve Wynn backing the product?  Everyone knows he is a demanding SOB and I so can only imagine the new ways they will want Alexa to perform for their guests.  All the new functions and abilities they will want to add to her already numerous functions and abilities that can then be enjoyed by the rest of us Echo users. Those of you who have one, know what I am talking about!

In a recent series of videos, Steve Wynn confessed that he has been sidetracked a bit with his Macau empire, but as that is crumbling, he has now refocused himself on transforming his Las Vegas properties.  This may be part of that new focus.

From the Wynn Press Release:

“As we have moved through the years, technology has always played an important part in our resorts,” said Steve Wynn, Chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts. “The thing that Amazon has done with Alexa is quite perfect.  If I have ever seen anything in my 49 years of developing resorts that has made our job of delivering a perfect experience to our guests easier and help us get to another level, it is Alexa.  The ability to talk to your room is effortlessly convenient. In partnership with Amazon, becoming the first resort in the world in which guests can verbally control every aspect of lighting, temperature and the audio-visual components of a hotel room is yet another example of our leadership in the world of technology for the benefit of all of our guests.”
