249 Talking About “We Are Going In”

In this episode, I talk with Mike Nelson, the author of a book titled  “We Are Going In” A book about the June 30, 1956, midair collision between a United DC 7 and a TWA Constellation over the Grand Canyon.

Mike’s uncle was one of the victims of the Grand Canyon plane crash. A devastating crash that helped change the way we fly today.

Last year I came across Mike’s book while on tour to the Grand Canyon.  The following day he was going to do a presentation. I was unable to make it back up for that so I sent him an email asking questions and getting some nice replies.  I ordered the book and almost immediately devoured it.

Mike’s book Wee Are Going In” walks us through the entire flight from start to finish and then on to the rescue and recovery.  He puts us in the aircraft(s) and we meet the some of the people on the doomed flights.

Then he takes us for a look at how air travel was like back then.  The grandeur of it as well as the danger, open skies and how the planes communicated and were tracked or not tracked.  As compared to today’s world of aviation where every moment of the flight is tracked.

He talks about the different theories that have been created about what might have happened and why.  Looking at them from an outsider’s point of view.

I call it the “Twilight Zone” method of description.  Stopping in a moment of time and examining the surroundings and explaining the theories as we also look at the location and what was all going on or should be going on.

As if we stopped time for a moment and looked into the windows of the planes to see what everyone was doing.

I found that to be a fascinating way to look at this tragedy. I hope you do too!

248 Talking About Responsible Gaming Ambassadors

Welcome back to another Vegas Tourist Podcast. This one is a little different. I am flying solo but that’s because this one is all about a very unique program that they have at the Las Vegas Sands Corporation.  The owners of the Palazzo and the Venetian resorts in Las Vegas and around the world.

Back in March, I saw that the Las Vegas Sands Corporation was holding their 6th annual Responsible gaming ambassador training program. And I thought What The Heck was that?
The more I thought about it, the more I was wondering about it. it got me to wonder.

What if one of your high rolling guests have a problem? is it the dealer’s responsibility? And if they do point it out, aren’t you risking potentially offending a big client?  Isnt the dealer risking his job by doing that?

So I put those questions to Maria-Christina Annaloro, director of Government Relations and Social Sciences at Las Vegas Sands.
And that was the brunt of our conversation.

246 Talking About Tape Face and Other Tourist Tidbits!

Welcome to Podcast #246 – Mark and Debbie return!  We have had a busy couple of weeks and come to you with lots of good stuff. First, we talk about our Sundance Las Vegas City Lights Helicopter night flight over Las Vegas (awesome). Did we mention that on Easter Sunday, we hiked up a mountain to look at some concrete arrows?

Don’t worry, she survived this hike without breaking any bones and we got to see some great views of Las Vegas while visiting a little piece of history. We end with a review of the brand new family-friendly show at Harrah’s Resort. Its the 2016 runner-up of Americas Got Talent – Tape Face.

I never saw Tape Face on the show America’s Got Talent, so I caught up with his act on YouTube and thought he was funny.  But could he stretch his material out over 75 minutes, keep it funny, fresh and creative for the next three years? The length of his contract.  Simple answer? Hell Yes! he can do it.
