In complete honesty and with a lot of personal experience, I can tell you that I have had better-tasting food nuked in an old dirty microwave at a truck stop in the middle of America at 3 am, then I had at Dick’s Last Resort inside the Excalibur. And I didn’t have to pay extra for the bad service.
I realize that Dick’s Last Resort is a restaurant chain that was built on its reputation of intentionally bad service. That the help has to audition first to prove they can give it and they can take it. But in Las Vegas, bad service really is the norm, not the exception. The banter between the snarly staff and the drunk guests is what built their popularity in other tourist towns and attracts guests to this one. It’s cute and it’s funny for about the first 30 seconds.
Out of our group of 6, four were tourists, one of our group was drunk and the only one who thought it was all hilarious. So he continued the griping and b*tching with our waiter for the entire meal.
I knew kind of what I was getting into as we were seated at the picnic tables. The waiter threw down the paper to cover the table and snarly introduced himself. Telling us the menu is on the wall, for us to read it. And he left. From there, it was pretty much a task to see if we could get his attention and maybe get some level of service. They stay in character the entire time, yet get short with you if you get the better of them in the verbal exchanges.
They did have a very talented balloon artist hitting the tables with the drunkest groups. Making them all funny balloon hats that all had a sexual theme to them. Again, it’s fun and cute for drunk tourists who want something different. But I cut it off when I am paying a high $$ price for it all.
I get it. It’s a tourist trap… Go for it.
But for what you pay for is less than what you get, I was expecting at least some edible food with the horrible service and snarly actors/waiters. This was not it.
What’s worse is that out of six meals, they got three right. The ones who were not served what they ordered had a dilemma. Do you eat what was served and try to tolerate the rest of the night? Or do you wait while the rest of the party eats while you try to get the waiter’s attention long enough to get serious and get the order right??? Yea, you know what happened there.
My advice is that if you are really wanting to experience Dick’s, go upstairs to the food court first, woof down some fast food than return to Dicks and order an appetizer while you watch your friends purposely get abused and willingly pay big bucks for that silly honor.
As a tour director, I have had some questionable meals served in some really questionable places. But now I can say what the worst restaurant food is in the Western United States is. It’s right here in Las Vegas and it’s at Dick’s Last Resort inside the Excalibur.
