Garth Brooks Returns to Las Vegas

The man who helped Steve Wynn reclaim his title as the savior of Las Vegas; Garth Brooks is coming back to Las Vegas to perform in the new Las Vegas Arena. The biggest-selling solo recording artist ever is set to bring his world tour to Las Vegas Arena for shows from July 2-4. Four performances in all: 7 p.m. July 2, 7 and 10:30 p.m. July 3 and 5 p.m. July 4.

Not counting his three-year acoustic residency at the Wynn/Encore, the last time Garth Brooks performed in concert in Las Vegas were four sold-out shows at the Thomas & Mack Center in 1998.

(See: 2009- Garth is in The House!)

This is Las Vegas, in a brand new, high-tech arena and this is would be a full-blown Garth Brooks concert, so we would expect nothing less than the best from the man.

In the news release issued today, Brooks said, “Vegas has to be different. The city, the venue and the people demand it. With the help of the city itself, this run of shows will be a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience.”

As an example of the record-setting ticket sales for his concerts, Garth recently played in Phoenix, where the demand was so great that they added two more shows, selling more than 60,000 tickets.  (adding shows to a location is not uncommon on his latest tour.) This broke his 1996 record of 53,248 tickets sold for shows at the American West Arena. .

  • Dixie Chicks reunion tour hits on July 16 (tickets)
  • Janet Jackson comes into the Las Vegas Arena May 14 (tickets)

108 We Got Garth, Craig and So Much More….

Criag Jackson and Mark Anthony

A new Podcast?? Ok, it’s been a little while since the last podcast. No real good reason other than life has been a bit busy and schedules need to align… And now they have.

Just in time for the big secret to get out to the world… Yup, Mark is looking for a new Co-host. Not for The Vegas Tourist… But for … well, you really need to listen to the podcast to know what for.

Than we have news that Garth Brooks was purchased by Steve Wynn. So he is coming out of retirement and gets a jet. The Barrett-Jackson Car Auction was a success and Mark has a great interview with the Craig Jackson, son of one of the founders of the company. Plus Sazzy had a great time shooting the SNORE 250 dirt race…

Garth Brooks moves in Las Vegas, Vegas walking tours

The worst kept secret in Las Vegas became the hottest news on earth this afternoon.  Steve Wynn and Garth Brooks took the stage inside the Encore Theater to announce the five-year headlining deal where Garth will call the shots.

Steve Wynn was beaming like a freshly fed Cheshire cat as his latest conquest welcomed everyone to the room.  You could see that there was a true sense of friendship between Steve Wynn and Garth Brooks, as they discussed how the deal came about.  Two different sides to the same story, as each tried to give credit to the other for making it all happen.

Garth Brooks opened up with the comment “I told him (Steve Wynn) that he couldn’t afford me.  I was wrong.”

And kept adding “Did I tell you about the jet??”  The deal included a Challenger jet he can use to commute from his home in Oklahoma to the Wynn Resort.

As for me, I have worked around, with and for celebrities.  But, watching how Garth Brooks handled himself proved to me that he has got to be the most considerate, well-spoken, friendliest, down to earth celebrity that has ever walked the planet. He will be a breath of fresh air to the Las Vegas scene.

To Garth, there were no first names, all Mr Wynn, Miss Trisha (his wife, Trisha Yearwood), Miss this and Mister that…  except when he spoke about his ex-wife.  She was just “Sandy.”

Unlike other big name performers on the strip, there was never a sense of ego in his voice or appearance. You could tell that he was actually grateful to be there and that this was not just about the money.  He even apologized to the media for standing up once and messing up the photographers’ shots!

He talked about how the show will not be about him, but about the audience and the fact that he gets to do what he loves, play music.  That it will be almost entirely unscripted and different every night depending on the energy of the crowd.  No band, just a country boy and his guitar, walking us down memory lane, and how he got his influences and what drives him as a performer.

“Did I tell you about the jet??”

The Encore Theater may be known as Garth’s home from this point on, but this moment proved to the world why Steve Wynn is still the king of Las Vegas. And he made sure the world knew it as the press conference was streamed live over the Internet.

Who else in this town has the balls to take a loss on the front end, by agreeing to Garth’s terms while betting he would make the costs up in the back end with new guests spending all their money in the casino?

Steve Wynn even joked about the cost of the deal  “If I were to tell you that, I would probably lose my job with the stockholders,”

And what a deal it is:

  • Friday through Sunday only.
Making sure he is home in time to take his kids to school.
  • Dates chosen quarterly based on Garth’s family schedule.
  • His own jet to fly him back and forth
  • Same ticket price for every seat in the house.
Tough anti-scalping measures to keep them low.
  • Tie-ins to Garth’s charities
  • Once the fun wears off, he can quit.

What a deal!!

Tickets for the first five sets of shows (Dec. 11-13, Jan. 1-3 and 22-24, and Feb. 12-14 and 26-28) go on sale by phone or through the Internet at 8 a.m. Oct. 24 at 702-770-7469 or wynnlasvegas.com/boxoffice.  No tickets will be sold at the box office!

101 – The Mayor, The Bulls and The Man behind SouthPoint

Yup, we broke the century mark and starting on the next 100 shows… Just for you!  And yes, that is a photo of South Point owner Michael Gaughan!

Also hitting the century mark is the Las Vegas summertime heat.  That means the stranger is getting stranger by the minute. The desert heat will do that to some people. We also noticed that our “The Vegas Tourist Tidbits” file is running over, so we figured it was time for another podcast.

Here are the links:

As Tour Director, Mark had time with Las Vegas mayor Oscar B Goodman.
Oscar is in his last term as mayor, I really feel sorry for whoever replaces him as mayor. How do you follow this act??

For those of you in town…. Don’t forget, June 20th is Mobsters and Goodfellas Night
Uncle Denny, Henry Hill, a bunch of FBI/Metro men from years gone by and a lot of great stories to pass around. On top of some great pizza!

The Chester Stiles sentencing. Worse than murder? I think so.

Steve Wynn and Garth Brooks… Something burning here??
It would be so nice to have some country on the strip!

World Series of Poker (WSOP) is in full swing. Just look at the picture above… Words can’t describe it!

Running of the Bulls is September 14/15 and 27/30. This is going to be fun!!

We end with an interesting interview with Michael Gaughan.  His father is the infamous Jackie Gaughan.  Who one time owned almost all of downtown.  Micheal followed in his father’s footsteps a little late in life.  But made up for it in creating some the best local casinos in Las Vegas before merging with his high school buddy and other famous Vegas family, the Boyds.  Then cashing out right after the Boyds made the power play and decided to blow up the Stardust.

Micheal Gaughn is now the owner of  the South Point Resort
