PBR World Finals – 23 Years and Counting

It all started in April of 1992 when 20 bull riders met at a Scottsdale, Ariz., motel room. Each man threw in $1,000 to form an organization that would establish professional bull riding as a standalone sport. That was the beginning of what is today “The Toughest Sport on Dirt”. The PBR!

The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) World Finals have always been held in Las Vegas and this week they are celebrating their 23rd edition in the all new T-Mobile Arena.  It’s official title is: PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals and The Vegas Tourist is there.

After a year of hard riding and competing, the top 35 bull riders plus 5 international invites come to las Vegas for 5 nights of back to back riding on the top bulls int he business.  For those not in the know, the bulls are considered to be athletes just as much as the men who ride on top of them.  They get scored right along with the riders.  Some of the best bulls have their own fan clubs and facebook pages. Retired champion bull Bushwacker has a facebook page with 42,000 likes!

PBR George Thorogood

Round One is in The Books

So last night, the safety seal was broke and the PBR brought the big show to the new T-Mobile Arena.  Kicking off the festivities was George Thorogood and the Destroyers.  Check Here to see who else will be opening each night.  From there, the cowboys came out to ride and the bulls were ready to prove them otherwise.  Only 12 of the 40 riders made the full 8 seconds.

The fun will continue through Sunday with the final round being called “the short round” where the top 15 of the weekend will compete to see who takes home the title of Champion Bull Rider and over $1 million in prize money.

Chase Outlaw, the 24-year-old from Arkansas who took the championship title at the BlueDef Finals held earlier this week at the South Point, made the best ride last night with a score of 89.5 .  Taking back to his hotel room a check for $30,000 for the night.   Fan favorite, J. B. Mauney is hanging onto 3rd place with a 85.75 point ride. (JB’s intro music is always George Thorogood’s Bad to The Bone)

FYI:  With athletes from 4 different nations, everyone in that arena knows how dangerous this sport is and how lucky they are to be there.  When they fly Old Glory and do the National Anthem at the start, every one of them will be standing with their hand / hat over their heart.  It’s real and you can feel it in the air!

Bushwacker, The Legend, to be Honored

PUEBLO, Colo. (June 22, 2016) — This year, the PBR’s (Professional Bull Riders) Heroes & Legends Celebration will honor the bucking bull widely considered to be the greatest in the history of the sport, three-time PBR World Champion Bull Bushwacker

A part of PBR Finals Week in Las Vegas (Oct. 29-Nov. 6), the PBR Heroes & Legends Celebration will take place at South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa on Tuesday, Nov. 1.  This year’s ceremony will induct the 2016 class of honorees: Bushwacker will be bestowed with the Brand of Honor; 1996 PBR World Champion Owen Washburn will be enshrined in the Ring of Honor; Dr. Tandy Freeman will receive the Jim Shoulders Lifetime Achievement Award; and LeAnn Hart will be honored with the Sharon Shoulders Award.

The Brand of Honor is awarded to a bull for his exemplary performance throughout his career.

Bushwacker bucked onto the PBR scene in 2009 as the ABBI (American Bucking Bull, Inc.) Reserve Wild Card Champion, then picked up $250,000 the following year as the 2010 ABBI World Champion Classic Bull. After allowing one Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) qualified ride in 2009 by Markus Mariluch, the 1,700-pound champion competed for four years on the BFTS, consecutively bucking off 42 cowboys, setting a new PBR record that holds to this day. After Mariluch, only long-time rival, J.B. Mauney was able to cover him, bringing the highly publicized streak to an end in 2013 for 95.25 points.  It is the highest-marked ride of the two-time and reigning PBR World Champion’s career to date.

Bushwacker, the most popular PBR athlete during his reign, was lauded by numerous media outlets, including an appearance in ESPN the Magazine’s The Body issue in 2013 as “Unridable.” Newsweek likened him to Michael Jordan; he was also covered by USA Today and the Wall Street Journal, and featured on CBS This Morning and ESPN’s E:60.

The champion bovine recorded 64 buck offs in 66 BFTS outs, ranking him eighth all-time in buck offs to date.  His career BFTS buck off percentage was 96.969 percent. He also earned an average bull score of 46.162 points. Bushwacker retired in 2014 after collecting his second consecutive, and third overall, PBR World Champion Bull title.

“This is very exciting,” said Julio Moreno, PBR stock contractor and owner of Bushwacker. “It’s very flattering to be able to say I have a bull that is receiving the Brand of Honor, especially since it’s Bushwacker.”

The PBR Ring of Honor was created in 1996 to recognize those who have had the most profound impact on the sport of bull riding, both inside and outside of the arena. Its 42 members share a common bond of courage, strength, and victory and have played a significant role in helping professional bull riding grow to become one of the ten most popular sports in the U.S. while now competing in five countries globally.

Helldorado Days Makes The PBR’s Day

.

The Professional Bull Riders (PBR), Las Vegas, and the MGM  have all had a long history together.  When the first PBR World Finals happened in 1995, it happened right here in Las Vegas.  As they grew, MGM Mirage (now MGM Resorts International) stepped up to help be the premiere sponsor, keeping the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas.   As the PBR grew in popularity, they never forgot the hospitality MGM and the city of Las Vegas showed to this up and coming sport.

We found the sport and the World Finals about ten years ago and have been super fans ever since.  Through the years, we met and became friends with another big fan of the PBR, Jason Hetland. Jason teamed up with The Vegas Tourist several times to be one of our reporters before striking out on his own by starting TheRodeoRoundup.com    Jason and his website have become the go-to source for breaking news and coverage of both the PBR and the world of rodeo.

This year, the PBR has a new CEO, not a new face, just a new title for a man who has been around the sport a long time.  Sean Gleason has been a busy man since taking over the organization.  But like everything else PBR/Vegas related, he never forgot what the city has done for the sport and wanted to pay the city back.  So his organization stepped up to the plate and offered to take over the rodeo for the historic Las Vegas event known as Helldorado Days.  An event that has been on shaky grounds the last few years and needed some serious professional management and branding.  The PBR is just the organization to do that.

The PBR will not only bring their newest signature events, The Last Cowboy Standing, but they are upholding and expanding the historical importance of the event to the city of Las Vegas. Most rodeo fans know, bull riding is linked to a long line of rodeos vitally important to the west, which the PBR has strived to honor and respect.  Both events will be held at the MGM Village grounds across from the Luxor – May 13-15.

While covering the BFT PBR event in Sioux Falls last week, Jason got an unusual spare moment alone with PBR CEO Sean Gleason, to talk about his love for the PBR in Las Vegas and the importance of Helldorado Days.  Plus they talk a little about the new home to the PBR World Finals (T-Mobile Arena) and the moving of the PBR BlueDef World Finals to South Point Casino in Las Vegas as well.  (told you they love Las Vegas!)

What is The Last Cowboy Standing?

Last Cowboy Standing will feature the world’s Top 35 bull riding stars from Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Australia and the U.S. in a single elimination format event. To advance to the next round, they must ride their bull till they make the 8-second buzzer.  Don’t make the 8 seconds? You go home.  The cowboys will ride in round after round of competition until only one rider remains as the Last Cowboy Standing.  He gets the points, the money and the buckle. In Vegas, it’s always about the bling!!

We Hope To See You There as we will be reporting to you live on all the usual social media channels!!
